When somebody sees the price of a well-bred puppy, they see one figure. The real cost of responsible breeding can begin years before that puppy is born.

The investment starts before pregnancy

A responsible breeder may have already paid to acquire and raise breeding stock, complete health testing, research pedigrees, collect or import semen, store genetics and use specialist reproductive veterinary services before a pregnancy even exists.

For New Zealand breeders preserving small populations, maintaining genetic diversity can mean looking beyond the dogs available locally. Overseas genetics add another layer of expense and uncertainty.
